This book\u00a0is written as a letter in which the main character\u00a0shares his life story.\u00a0Each chapter focuses on his life as he was serving a different master.<\/p>\n<p>One reason it\u2019s significant is because many believe it founded the \u201cpicaresque\u201d novel. This style features a lovable rogue, or <em>p\u00edcaro<\/em>, in episodic adventures. The style was later employed by many authors like Mark Twain in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/adventureshuckle00twaiiala\"><em>The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lazarillo_de_Tormes\"><em>Lazarillo de Tormes<\/em><\/a> was also considered heretical due to its anti-clerical content, and this is why it was published anonymously. During the Spanish Inquisition, it was even banned.<\/p>\n<p>Although distinguished scholars have tried to attribute it to different authors based on a variety of criteria, the book is still considered anonymous. The list of candidates is long and not all of them enjoy the same support within the scholarly community.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, <a href=\"https:\/\/es.coursera.org\/learn\/machine-learning\">machine learning techniques<\/a> to recognize\u00a0style and text fingerprinting has been recently applied to\u00a0<em>Lazarillo de Tormes.\u00a0<\/em>(See <a href=\"http:\/\/xxx.lanl.gov\/pdf\/1611.05360v1\">article<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/cache\/epub\/437\/pg437.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-714 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost\/spanishclassicbooks\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/lazarillo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"593\" height=\"217\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Analyzing other <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish_Golden_Age\">Spanish Golden Age<\/a>\u00a0works from a data-driven perspective and applying machine learning techniques, <a href=\"http:\/\/xxx.lanl.gov\/pdf\/1611.05360v1\">Javier de la Rosa and Juan Luis Su\u00e1rez<\/a> (The University of Western Ontario, London, Canada)\u00a0shed light on the authorship of the <em>Lazarillo<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Their conclusion\u00a0is that\u00a0the most likely author seems to be <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Juan_de_Arce_de_Ot\u00e1lora\">Juan Arce de Ot\u00e1lora<\/a>, closely followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alfonso_de_Vald\u00e9s\">Alfonso de Vald\u00e9s<\/a>.
